HEQ5 non goto
« on: March 29, 2016, 15:27:56 »

Hi,

I recently purchased a standard HEQ5 (non GOTO or SynScan) which has a ST4 port wired to the controller.  I was wondering if this would work with the "AstroEQ"? If not, what modifications would I need to make to the mount? Also would I be able to use it for deep space astrophotography?

Hi,

Sorry, I appear to have missed your thread.

It is possible to convert the standard HEQ5 to go-to using AstroEQ. It requires the connectors in the motors to be directly connected to RJ11 cables (the ST4 port and motor board in the HEQ5 are of no use in the process). I have in the past worked out the pin assignments for wiring up the cables (I think I may also have some of the motor connectors lying around somewhere).

The only thing with the non-goto HEQ5 is that I've never been able to find definitive gear ratios and step angles for the motors. I seem to recall someone found approximate values via trial and error, but to find the exact values would require counting the teeth in the gearboxes.

Found this thread since I have the same black HEQ5 mount with standard motors.

I purchased an AstroEQ from Tom last feb but have only just bought the above mount second hand. Decided to remove the motors to view and low and behold they have stickers on them with the specs as follows;

RA Motor:  SYNTA DW1323008
Model:  42BYJ07
Step Angle:  3.75º /  7.5º
Voltage:  12VDC (6 pin connector) wires are red, brown, yellow, blue, black, white.
Ratio:  1:131.876

DEC Motor:  SYNTA DW1323009
Model:  42BYJ08
Step Angle:  3.75º /  7.5º
Voltage:  12VDC (4 pin connector) wires are red, brown, yellow, blue.
Ratio:  1:131.876

Is that any help?
Regards,
Neil.

Hi Neil,

Those stickers are really handy, a great find. The one thing I've never seen until now is what the ratio of the gearboxes for the HEQ5. As I say, I've previously worked with someone who has a HEQ5 to try and estimate the ratios, and the closest we could come up with was 135:1, though that wasn't perfect. It's good to know we were in the ball park.

I will also add the pin mapping of the connectors to this thread for completeness as well once I get back from visiting my family tomorrow - I don't have the diagram on my laptop.

I've updated the list of known mount configurations and uploaded a .conf file for the standard HEQ5 here.

Kind Regards,
Tom.

These sound like the same motors I found inside my early, black, EQ6 too. Unfortunately they didn't have any identifying marks.

Another with an old HEQ5 non goto mount here.

I purchased the AstroEQ April last year, but have only just got round to start building it. I was interested to find this thread, especially as I thought I was going to have to replace the original steppers, but now it seems I might not.

However, as Spookylight shows in both his photos and specs, the RA stepper is a 6 lead motor, whilst the DEC stepper is 4 lead. On the 'Building Your Own Controller' pages, the section on using using a 6 and 8 lead stepper covers using SJ1 and SJ2 to bridge, but I can't work out from the description what combination of SJ1 and SJ2 I would use do drive one 4 lead, and one 6 lead stepper. Or if this is even possible?

Has anyone completed the AstroEQ conversion to the non goto HEQ5 using the original steppers?
Many thanks

Hi,

Sorry about that, completely forgot about this thread - I'd always inteded to upload the pinout.

Attached is the wiring for these motors. RA is on the left, DEC is on the right.

Kind Regards,
Tom.

Hi,
thanks for uploading those, that will make life easier!
Do I need to do anything with SJ1 and SJ2? Or can they stay as they are ie unj-umpered?
Many thanks

You'll need to add jumpers based on which driver you are using. There are markings on the board to indicate which connections to make.

Hi,  I have a 2001 HEQ 5, I might need to know this if I am going to modify my mount (and I WANT to!!!)

The 4 wire stepper is clear.

The 6 wire...
from bottom to top :  Blk to Wht,  Red to Blk,  Grn to Red, Yel to Yel.  Correct?

Thanks
