EQ5 pro using AstroEQ
« on: September 18, 2017, 22:16:17 »

Hi.
I own a EQ5 pro with synscan but i was wondering.. As the mount is now well over a year old and no electrical stuff is guaranteed for life would the AstroEq setup work with this mount if the original controller went down. So in effect all i have is a mount with two motors.

I have modded this already to run with belt control as i didnt like the brass cogs at all and i am in the middle of contemplating inserting needle rollers bearings into the axis and also modding the Dec with a needle bearing too. so not shy at fiddleing with it.

Hi Marty,

It should be possible to do that so long as you know the gear ratios of the mount (can get those from the EQMOD website).

You wouldn't be able to use the hand controller with the AstroEQ. In theory it should be possible, but I don't have one so I haven't been able to do any major testing/debugging of such.

Kind Regards,
Tom.

Thank you Tom.

I have all the info for the mount regarding the ratios, That came in handy when i was calculating the pulleys for the belt mod. I have already had one handset fail so knowing i can still control the mount by other means if the motor control box goes is very handy. I know the motors fitted are EQ5GT so i hope they are adequate or compatible with the AstroEQ.

I have intentions of getting an arduino anyway as i would like to control other items like the roof and focus.
