Forum Down Time
« on: March 24, 2015, 02:52:40 »

Hi All,

I have noticed that from time to time the forum becomes inaccessible - giving a 500 Server Error. I am not entirely sure what is causing this. Hopefully I can find the cause and solution.
Until then, if you find you cannot access the forum, don't worry it's still here. Just give it 20 minutes or so and try again. It seems to come back by itself after a while.

Regards,
Tom.

Hi Tom,

First post to the forums!  ;D

I could has a guess at where the 500 error comes from.
It's often due to your Kerberos Security Token, in a windows domain, growing too large. Are you administering the forum from within a windows domain (at work *cough*)?

Hi Leigh,

It's running on a Linux Server that I only have limited control of (the site is on a shared hosting package). Doesn't seem to be something with the server as I've looked at the stats for it and there is nothing out of the ordinary in terms of load.
I think it may be something to do with PHP APC, from what I can tell from googling bits of the error logs they seem to be related.

Finally tracked down the problem to incorrect file permissions on some of the forum files. I corrected them a few weeks ago and haven't seen any issues since, so I'm quite happy it's fixed.
