Sharing a PSU
« on: July 28, 2015, 11:34:00 »

Sorry this question is a little left field
I have an AstroEq with 2 Nema 14 stepper motors (0.8A) and the main power supply from you (12V 5A).
I'm looking to add an ASCOM DIY focuser using an Ardunio nano, Easy driver and a stepper motor; likely a geared Nema 14 (0.8A) or Nema 17 (1.6A).
I would like to share the PSU (there are limited socket out in the field) with the focuser but I wanted to check that I could run both without issue?
Is the supplied 5A PSU sufficient for the Nema 17 or would I have to fiddle with the current setting?
Many Thanks

I wouldn't have thought this would be an issue. The motor drivers in AstroEQ convert voltage to current, so the current drawn from the supply will be less than the rated current of the motors. Even so I would perhaps go for the lower current NEMA 14 motor for the focuser as well. Just make sure to add sufficient smoothing capacitors in your focuser circuit.
